Mathematics is a digital agency that designs and builds for some of the world's most innovative media companies. We’re looking for a talented Full Stack Developer to join us in Whitechapel, east London.

Our work reaches millions of people every month, with clients that include Mixmag, Dazed Media, Kerrang!, The Face, Hearst, Bauer and Birkenstock. We obsess about using technology to help publishers attract, maintain and grow engaged audiences, and right now we're in the midst of some exciting expansion.

Here's where you come in

You'll be heading-up development for some incredible clients, creating bespoke builds for consumer-level publishing companies, powered by Craft CMS and Wordpress.

You’ll be involved in all aspects of the development lifecycle from inception through to build, test and deployment, then monitoring, maintaining and continuing to improve fast-moving, high traffic websites when they're live.

What you’ll be doing

There isn’t an average project at Mathematics and all builds go beyond simple ‘colour by numbers’ projects. On any given day you could be:

  • Implementing a new project and maintaining existing builds

  • Migrating data for new clients moving to Mathematics

  • Helping identify improvements to existing builds

  • Optimising existing sites by refactoring code, using new standards and best practice

  • Testing new ad tech, plugins or systems for editorial

  • Creating intuitive and user-friendly interfaces

  • Spotting opportunities to use tech to help drive traffic to clients

  • Using APIs and reporting to help editorial and marketing teams

  • Providing support and fixing bugs on existing projects

  • Keeping up to date with the latest standards and implementing when beneficial

  • Working on our in-house publication, a media information resource relied upon by NY Times, Netflix and Vice News


We're looking a gifted developer with:

  • Strong experience building websites and applications using LAMP architecture. This will require knowledge of PHP5+ & OOP, and MySQL5 and its surrounding technologies.

  • Understanding of MVC frameworks - principles and hands-on experience

  • HTML, CSS, JavaScript

  • Experience with HTML5 elements (video/audio) and CSS3 properties (+Animations/Transitions)

  • Knowledge and experience of jQuery, SASS / LESS, Frontend Frameworks

  • Understanding of basic DevOps (Deployment/SSH/Basic Load Balancing, Caching, DNS) - ability to setup staging and production environments and understand the basic principles of scalable architectures. A basic-mid level knowledge of using Linux terminal (ideally Debian/Ubuntu) is preferred.

  • Understanding of the concept of database migrations and seeds

  • Knowledge of version control (Git) and experience with branch based workflows

  • Good programming style, strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure

  • Experience building at the highest quality level, strong attention to detail

  • Experience with at least 2 of the following: Craft CMS, Wordpress, ExpressionEngine, Perch, October

Hours: Full-time 10-6pm with potential flexibility for a pro-rata contract

Salary: Upwards of £45,000
