Web Developer LOCALPERMANENT

Job Description

We’re looking for a Web Developer to join our Leeds-based web agency.

The successful applicant will have a minimum of 2 years of experience of building and maintaining websites in an agency environment (ideally using Craft CMS), and be enthusiastic and confident about their work.

We’re looking for someone who can:

  • Build high-end, responsive and performant websites, based on a design and specification.
  • Support and maintain our existing client websites.
  • Work to their own initiative.
  • Manage themselves and their time well, and prioritise their work to meet agreed deadlines and schedules.
  • Pick up new skills quickly, and is willing to delve into documentation to figure things out.

Essential Skills

  • Strong HTML & CSS Knowledge.
  • Good knowledge of modern JavaScript (ES2015+). You don’t need experience of JavaScript frameworks such as Vue or React as we don’t use them.
  • Knowledge of using Tailwind CSS for front-end builds.
  • Knowledge of templating languages such as Twig.
  • Knowledge of PHP.
  • Familiar with build processes such Node.js, Gulp, Webpack, parcel.js, and comfortable using composer to update and install CMS plugins.
  • Excellent understanding of responsive web design and writing performant and standards compliant code.
  • Excellent understanding of accessibility on the web, and building websites that meet WCAG guidelines.
  • Knowledge and experience of content management systems - specifically Craft CMS, but for the right candidate, transferable skills from other platforms (such as WordPress) may be considered.
  • Ability to carry out your own testing and quality assurance, so work you do can be handed over straight to clients with a minimum of feedback from us or our clients.

Desirable Skills

  • Ability to write simple CMS plugins using PHP (e.g. Craft CMS plugins).
  • Ability to write queries using MySQL.
  • Familiar with Shopify and their Liquid templating language.
  • Familiar with building or maintaining eCommerce websites, e.g. sites built using Craft Commerce, Shopify, WooCommerce, etc.
  • Comfortable working with APIs for things such as payment gateways, booking systems, etc.

Knowledge of SEO best practice.

  • Experience of upgrading Craft CMS websites from version 3 to version 4 would be a bonus as we have a lot of client sites to upgrade and maintain.
  • Familiar with web hosting and basic server administration (cPanel/WHM, Laravel Forge, Amazon S3/EC2, Plesk).

Person Specification

  • Ability to work to own initiative.
  • Ability to work well within a team.
  • Good communication skills - both verbal and written, and the ability to explain technical issues in a way that clients and colleagues will understand. We use software such as Teamwork, Basecamp and Slack, so written communication is very important.
  • Ability to write good, clean code and mark-up that is well documented.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Efficient and hard-working.
  • The ability to learn new skills and figure things out if you become stuck or blocked. But at the same time, also not be afraid to ask colleagues for help if needed, or post in GitHub issues, Stack Exchange, Discord or other resources to seek assistance.
  • The ability to pick up projects built by someone else and to help maintain and support these projects going forward.
  • An interest and passion for web design, with a keen interest in the latest web trends and technology. We’re always open to new and improved ways of working.

Salary & Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Pension scheme
  • Flexible/hybrid working model around core hours
  • Mac computer (laptop and external display)
  • Interesting and fun working environment at Duke Studios in Leeds City Centre

Location

We’re based at Duke Studios in Leeds. Ideally, we’d like someone to work from here with us but we are open to remote or hybrid working for the right candidate (but you must be UK-based).

About Made by Bridge

Our small but experienced team has been building websites for over 15 years. We also work with several contractors and freelancers who bring a wealth of experience to our projects.

We work with a range of clients from SMEs, to charities, to multinational corporations, and everything in between. We work directly with our own clients as well as working with other agencies to help deliver their website projects.

How we work

We mostly work on Craft CMS websites, but we do have the odd client that has a Shopify or WordPress site that we also need to support.

Our website code is version controlled using Git, and we use Git Tower to help manage this when it comes to creating branches and resolving merge conflicts, etc.

The sites we work on will typically have multiple development environments (local, staging and production), and we will test our own work thoroughly so bugs and issues are kept to an absolute minimum.

We all use Apple Macs and you will be provided with a MacBook Pro to carry out your work. In our office at Duke Studios in Leeds, you will have a desk, a comfy office chair, a 27” external display, keyboard and mouse.

We use Tailwind CSS to carry out our front-end styling so if you know this, you’ll pick up existing projects seamlessly. We take site performance and accessibility seriously, so you will be familiar with best practices for this, and know how to test for this.

We usually add CSS transitions, animations, or other dynamic and interactive elements to our front-end using JavaScript, to give our websites the finishing touches that clients love, so this is something that you will be comfortable doing.

We use Visual Studio Code as our code editor (but you can use whatever you want!), we use MAMP for our local development environments (or DDEV for newer Craft sites). We use Sequel Ace as our remote MySQL administration tool, Transmit as our FTP client, and Terminal for SSH administration. Clients provide us with designs for new builds and new features using various software including Figma, Adobe XD, Photoshop and Illustrator.
